Surface defect detection for steel slabs
One of our client’s customers is a German steel manufacturer actively investing in digital transformation. The company runs its own R&D department focused on developing innovative technologies to improve production processes.
The client needed a solution to visualize high-resolution surface scan data from steel slabs. Traditional client applications struggled with performance and usability when dealing with several gigabytes of raw data.
On top of that, the system had to support real-time analytics, deliver clear reporting and remain easy to deploy across various production environments.

Working closely with the client’s R&D team, XPG Factor developed a next-generation defect visualization system – stable, scalable, and built to handle heavy data loads. The result outperformed previous tools in both reliability and functionality.
The project followed an Agile development process, with regular sprints, weekly syncs, and transparent communication. All features were tested and refined in direct collaboration with the client’s R&D team, ensuring fast iterations and solutions tailored to real production needs.
After commissioning, the developed system has proven its effectiveness by speeding up processes and improving the accuracy of defect detection:
15x faster data processing
Large data volumes are now processed significantly faster, enabling quicker decisions and shorter feedback loops.
Early detection of hidden defects
Higher scan accuracy allows the system to catch issues that would otherwise go unnoticed, reducing defect rates by 18%.
Up to €120,000 annual savings
By streamlining visual inspection and cutting down scrap rates, the system helps save substantial operational costs each year.
